How do you put on a padel racket overgrip?

How to put on an overgrip like the pros?

Players really struggle with gripping their rackets. Many players put too many grips on it or they do not put enough grip on the racket. Sandy will explain how the pros put on the overgrip, what you should be doing and how you should be feeling your grip.

The size of the overgrip does not matter. You want to avoid a too thick or a too thin grip if you have got an elbow or shoulder injury. How thin or how thick your overgrip is, does not influence your game. You have to put on an overgrip the way you feel comfortable with.

Why do the pros mostly have white grips?

There are two reasons:

  • The white grip is kind of obvious when it is used and you can see when it needs changing easier than a black grip or another color.
  • The white grip is better performing (it is a thing among the top players, but I do not know the theory behind it).

Changing the overgrip

  • Take the plastic off. Do not throw the piece of adhesive away!
  • There is a little bit of sticky at the thin end. Start with the thin end on the back of the racket. Put it as close as possible at the end of the racket.
  • Keep your thumb on the end and you are going to wrap that round the top of the grip.
  • Pro players want to make the bottom of the racket thicker. If you want to do that, you will wrap a few times around the bottom of the racket. If you do not want a thicker bottom, you will roll up into the racket and always want to pull it tight.
  • If you really like a really thin racket, you will only overlap by a millimeter or two. If you want a thicker racket, you can have a bigger overlap. Most of the players will use a tennis grip, so you have more grip to overlap.
  • Some players finish the grip to the top of the racket, because when you put your left hand also on the racket, you will have some grip with your left hand.
  • When you are at the top of the racket, you can cut the rest off. Then take the piece of adhesive, put your thumb on it and then just wind that round.
